What does your job involve:
I am responsible, with the Project Manager, for effectively delivering the refurbishment work to the Ocean Estate. In particular, I deal with the financial and contract issues – making sure our client gets value for money and that our supply chain partners do their work safely and properly first time, every time.
When a project is managed well and efficiently we can make sure that there is as much money as going towards making the estate a better place.
What is it about your job that you enjoy the most?
We like to tailor our approach to any job to the character of the estate and more importantly, the people that live there rather than just provide an ‘‘off the shelf service’’. I really enjoy finding out what makes this estate tick and what we can do that is unique. I was amazed to find out that Rhythm and Blues legend Billy Ocean grew up here and took his name from the estate – little details like that show that every estate is different.
Is there such thing as a typical day on the Ocean?
Like any other job there are things that need to be done every day, but with a wide range of work affecting almost 1,400 homes on the estate, there is always a new challenge. One day I might be looking at door styles and window frames, the next it might be how we engage with our residents about the landscaping – its what makes my job interesting.
What part of the regeneration are you most looking forward to?
There are three types of work being done on the estate – inside people’s homes, the outsides of the blocks and the landscaping around them. The first milestone for me will be completing all three for the first few blocks and being able to show residents how much of a difference this will make when the work is done.
