Stepney City Farm to begin cultivating food

Stepney City Farm is to begin cultivating its own food after it won a lottery grant.

The farm will start up a Local Food Fund scheme later this month after securing £26,000 of funding from the Big Lottery foundation, the East London Advertiser reports.

Ten people will also be given the opportunity to run the project, however their work will be purely on a volunteer basis.

Over the next two years ten unused spaces around Tower Hamlets will be picked for the growing of fruit and vegetables, and while the sites have yet to be chosen it is believed that they could range from private gardens to social housing land.

Trainees will then be able to sell the produce they grow at the farm in Stepney Way, with money helping to fund further training and supplies.

Farm manager, Jessica Hodge explained to the paper that, while there are no guaranteed jobs at the site after training, "the skills acquired will help with finding jobs elsewhere".
